The three top essays of the 2014 Bethany Peace Essay Contest have been announced by Bethany Seminary. Out of thirty-two entries submitted, the following placed first, second, and third, respectively, and received prizes of $2000, $1000, and $500.

Malinda Berry, assistant professor of theological studies and director of the MA program at Bethany Seminary, has announced that she is taking the position of assistant professor of theology and ethics at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) in Elkhart, Indiana, effective July 1, 2014. As an active presence in Mennonite Church USA and a graduate of AMBS, Berry has an opportunity to contribute to her home denomination in this new position.

Carrie EicklerCarrie Eikler has been named the new half-time coordinator of the TRIM and EFSM Ministry Training Programs at the Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership. She will begin her duties on February 1, 2014. The Brethren Academy is a ministry training partnership of the Church of the Brethren and Bethany Theological Seminary.

“Living Love Feast” was the theme of the sixth Presidential Forum held at Bethany, featuring Shane Claiborne, Ruth Anne Reese, Janet Walton, and Ted Swartz. Forum guests reflected on ways of experiencing love feast.

Students in classBethany Seminary is seeking a part-time project director with education and experience in financial planning and program implementation to fulfill the aims of a grant received from Lilly Endowment Inc. This appointment will be renewed annually for up to three years.

DiverNext summer has a special event in store for jr. high students: Immerse! will bring youth who have completed seventh, eighth, and ninth grades together to share questions, experiences, and ideas about faith, all within a community of friendship and support. Sponsored by the Institute for Ministry with Youth and Young Adults at Bethany Seminary, Immerse!

Bethany Seminary has received a grant of $249,954 as part of Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Theological School Initiative to Address Economic Issues Facing Future Ministers. Bethany is one of sixty-seven theological schools across the country to receive this funding.

Bethany Theological Seminary will welcome prospective students to ENGAGE on Friday, November 1, 2013. Now in its sixth year, this campus visit event is designed to both provide students with practical information about enrolling in seminary study and to include them in seminary activities and experiences.

Campus guests will take part in worship, interact with a panel of current students, attend class, meet with faculty, and be informed about the admissions process, all with encouragement for each participant to continue discerning the path to which they are called.

Bethany Theological Seminary is encouraging seminary and graduate school, college, and high school students to think creatively about peacemaking and to share those thoughts for the greater good. The Bethany Peace Essay Contest is being reinstated this coming January as part of the peace studies program at the Seminary.

Russell HaitchOn Saturday, October 26, Russell Haitch presented a professorial lecture at Bethany Seminary, commemorating his promotion to full professor of practical theology. Free and open to the public, the lecture began at 7:15 pm (EDT) and was webcast.

MonicaIt is no small task to choose a topic that will hold enough interest to devote countless hours and hundreds of pages of reading and writing. I have found that topic in researching the tradition of the prayer covering in the Church of the Brethren. This practice piqued my curiosity because of the lack of available writing and discussion about it. For instance, the last time that Annual Meeting/Conference addressed the covering was 1925!
