The inauguration of Bethany Seminary’s tenth president was the central event of the spring 2014 board meeting. The board also devoted time to discussing issues pertaining to the operation of a seminary like Bethany in today’s social and cultural climate.

Stole and tableBethany Seminary has named Courtney Hess as project director for the grant of $249,954 received as part of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Theological School Initiative to Address Economic Issues Facing Future Ministers. Hess began his duties on April 1, 2014.

The three top essays of the 2014 Bethany Peace Essay Contest have been announced by Bethany Seminary. Out of thirty-two entries submitted, the following placed first, second, and third, respectively, and received prizes of $2000, $1000, and $500.

Malinda Berry, assistant professor of theological studies and director of the MA program at Bethany Seminary, has announced that she is taking the position of assistant professor of theology and ethics at Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS) in Elkhart, Indiana, effective July 1, 2014. As an active presence in Mennonite Church USA and a graduate of AMBS, Berry has an opportunity to contribute to her home denomination in this new position.

Carrie EicklerCarrie Eikler has been named the new half-time coordinator of the TRIM and EFSM Ministry Training Programs at the Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership. She will begin her duties on February 1, 2014. The Brethren Academy is a ministry training partnership of the Church of the Brethren and Bethany Theological Seminary.

Students in classBethany Seminary is seeking a part-time project director with education and experience in financial planning and program implementation to fulfill the aims of a grant received from Lilly Endowment Inc. This appointment will be renewed annually for up to three years.

DiverNext summer has a special event in store for jr. high students: Immerse! will bring youth who have completed seventh, eighth, and ninth grades together to share questions, experiences, and ideas about faith, all within a community of friendship and support. Sponsored by the Institute for Ministry with Youth and Young Adults at Bethany Seminary, Immerse!

Bethany Seminary has received a grant of $249,954 as part of Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Theological School Initiative to Address Economic Issues Facing Future Ministers. Bethany is one of sixty-seven theological schools across the country to receive this funding.

"Determined to make it happen"

My call came to me as I was sitting at a spiritual retreat talking about women in ministry. Suddenly I just had this overwhelming feeling that I knew I was supposed to be one of those women. That event started me on a journey that has been remarkable, wonderful, challenging, and sometimes scary. But one certainty has been clear since the beginning: Bethany Theological Seminary was going to be a part of that journey. It took me six years to finish my undergraduate degree, and then I took a year to rest, but I finally made it here!
